Committing to orthodontic treatment can feel like a big step, which is why it’s good to know exactly what you’re committing yourself to. Invisalign is a popular, modern alternative to traditional braces because it offers unique benefits, like discretion, comfort, and convenience. These treatment traits make it excellent for teens and adults alike. Read on to learn what the step-by-step Invisalign process looks like so you know what to expect.
1. The Consultation
The first step of every Invisalign treatment is a new patient examination with your orthodontist. They will speak with you about your goals and expectations for the process as well as review your dental history. Based on this initial evaluation, they can help you determine whether Invisalign is the right solution for your individual needs.
2. Diagnostic Imaging & Impressions
After deciding to move forward with treatment, your orthodontist will capture necessary diagnostic imaging to track your progress along the way as well as create a treatment plan for you to follow. Using an iTero digital impression and imaging device, they’ll craft a 3D digital blueprint of your teeth to ensure that each series of trays you receive is specifically designed for you. They’ll then send the impressions off to the Invisalign lab to craft your aligners.
3. Getting Your Invisalign Trays
As soon as your orthodontist receives your customized Invisalign trays, they’ll call you back into the office to show you how to use and take care of them. Some patients require buttons being placed on their teeth to help hold the aligners in place. These are small, tooth-colored bumps of composite resin that can easily be removed after your treatment is complete.
4. Check-In Appointments
Throughout your treatment, you’ll regularly visit your orthodontist for follow-ups to make sure you’re on track with your treatment plan and to pick up your next series of trays in your process. These visits can typically be completed over your lunch break because they only last a few minutes!
5. Refinements
After you’ve completed all of your treatment trays, you may need some slight refinements made to inch your teeth into their ideal positions. This can involve one or two additional corrective aligners before your orthodontist can move onto the final step of the process.
6. Button Removal & Retainer
Once your teeth and bite are aligned, it’ll be time to remove the buttons and provide you with your retainer. Like any orthodontic treatment, it’s crucial to wear a retainer afterward to maintain the results that you worked so hard for. This is because your teeth have a sort of muscle memory that will cause them to gradually shift back into their original positions. With proper retainer usage, you can enjoy your newly aligned smile for the rest of your life.
